Desk Note
Live headlines stay current. The five briefings below are the scripted hearing desk. The number scores the wording. It is not a verdict. Notes from the previous studio are quoted, not adopted.
Each new headline is its own breaking note. Tap Notify this phone so the push server can reach it after the app is closed.

The reading
The sentence first
The large picture is the lead. Three cards sit beside it. A row follows, then a list with a small picture on the left. The short label is the desk, not a slogan.

On the board
September 2026 · released October 2
Monthly job creation
Employers added 29,000 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate was 4.2 percent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said both changed little. The Federal Reserve Board does not run this survey. It uses the Bureau’s release when it talks about the labor market.
Source: Employment Situation, September 2026. Seasonally adjusted. August and September payroll changes are still marked preliminary.
Change in nonfarm payrolls
Thousands of jobs, from the establishment survey. A shorter bar is a smaller change, not a worse country.
The three-month average change in September was 51,000. Over the prior 12 months, the average monthly gain was 45,000.
The same release
Private employers added 46,000 jobs. Government employment fell by 17,000.
Health care added 17,000, slower than its 33,000 average over the prior year. Construction added 11,000. Manufacturing added 9,000.
Average hourly earnings were $37.81, up 5 cents on the month and 3.0 percent over the year.
Unemployment was 4.1 percent in August and 4.2 percent in September. Labor force participation was 61.8 percent.
On September 29, before this release, Governor Barr told an audience that job creation had averaged around 80,000 a month in 2026 and that unemployment was 4.1 percent. That sentence is the Board’s comment. It is not the September count.

Power ranking
Who is ahead, and who has slipped
A rating is not a vote. Election Day is still ahead. These marks are the ones Cook published in the open, not a full ballot of every race.
Ahead
1. U.S. House
Favored to take it
Democrats
Cook says the Republican majority is on track to flip. Democrats hold 215 seats and need a net of 3. The published range is a gain of 5 to 15, which would land at 220 to 230.
2. North Carolina Senate
Likely Democrat
Democrats
On October 6 Cook moved this race from Lean Democrat to Likely Democrat. That is the strongest named Senate mark in that update.
3. New Hampshire Senate
Lean Democrat
Democrats
Cook moved New Hampshire from Toss Up to Lean Democrat on October 6. Lean is an edge, not a called result.
Behind
1. Republican House majority
On track to lose it
Republicans
As of September 25, Cook had Democrats favored in 208 House races rated Solid, Likely, or Lean, and Republicans favored in 205. Toss-ups were still unsettled.
2. Kansas Senate
Lean edge is gone
Republicans
Cook moved Kansas from Lean Republican to Toss Up on October 6. The seat is no longer rated their way. It is also not rated a Democratic win.
3. Republican Senate majority
A narrow path remains
Republicans
Democrats need a net of 4 Senate seats. Cook’s range is a gain of 2 to 6. A Michigan pickup and a Maine hold could keep that gain under 4.
Paths
How a majority is reached
Each circle is a node and each line is a relationship, the way Neo4j stores a map. The paths are ordered the way BloodHound orders a route: lower cost first. Cost here means how settled the public rating is, not how a computer network can be crossed. This desk does not scan a network.
Path 1. The House majority changes hands
Cost 2
- Democrats HOLD 215 seats — Reported September 25.
- 215 seats NEED 218 — A net of 3 is a bare majority.
- Cook RANGE 220 to 230 — If the gain is 5 to 15.
Charlie Cook wrote on October 6 that the House majority will flip. How large the new majority is remains open.
Path 2. Republicans keep the Senate
Cost 6
- Republicans HOPEFUL PICKUP Michigan — Cook’s remaining path, not a new rating.
- Republicans HOPEFUL HOLD Maine — Cook’s remaining path, not a new rating.
- Those two CAPS THE GAIN Under a net of 4 — A Democratic gain of 2 would miss a majority.
This is the path Cook says can still protect the Republican majority. It is a hope in the article, not a rating that those two races are safe.
Path 3. Democrats clear a Senate majority
Cost 7
- Democrats LIKELY North Carolina — Cost 1. Cook, October 6.
- Democrats LEAN New Hampshire — Cost 2. Cook, October 6.
- Democrats TOSS-UP Kansas — Cost 4. Moved off Lean Republican. Not yet a win.
Those three links do not add up to the net of 4. Cook’s high end is a gain of 6, but the open article does not name the other seats. This path is ahead, and it is still short.
